Once the relations are established, the function of a given stimulus will transfer to other stimuli within the relational network, such as the spoken word, the written word, and our internal behaviors. What does this mean? If the “stimulus” is the word “dog,” and dogs are related with pleasant memories, emotions, experiences, or physical feelings, upon hearing “dog” a child will orient towards the animal. Conversely, if the stimulus “dog” is associated with unpleasant thoughts, emotions, experiences, or physical feelings, the child will perhaps run away when she hears the word, even if she hasn’t seen the animal yet.

So when we say “dog” the child will orient toward the family pet. When relations between the object and the spoken word (or the written word, for that matter) are trained in one direction, and the reverse relationship is derived without direct training, we call this mutual entailment. This happens first based on nonarbitrary features of the stimuli, those that we experience with our five senses, and it happens over multiple learning trials. 21 ACT for Adolescents Combinatorial Entailment Once mutual entailment is established, children learn combinatorial entailment, which involves training two relationships and deriving four untrained relationships, resulting in a total of six relationships.

Over time, being loved coordinates with self worth, and doing well also coordinates with self worth through combinatorial entailment. By transformation of stimulus function, doing well becomes desirable. Put more simply, the ideas of doing well, being loved, and feeling worthy all become connected, and thinking of one will evoke the others. In addition, if one idea is desirable, such as doing well, then being loved and feeling worthy are also desirable. Doing poorly, however, may be in a frame of opposition with doing well, and through combinatorial entailment, will also be in a frame of opposition with being loved.
