Where before they perhaps guessed at cancer or some wasting disease, now they suspect or know the truth – Anorexia has taken over. Some friends move on, drift away, unable to cope or rejected by Anorexia. Family relationships hit a new low. In the past there have been ups and downs, now Down is the norm as everyone tiptoes around trying to say and do the right thing only to find there is no right thing – it changes daily.

Relationships have deteriorated to a tangled mess before it is recognized that, in the midst of everything, Anorexia is manipulating, lying and cheating, telling twisted tales – remember, her perceptions are all distorted – then screaming and shouting, blaming everyone else for the trouble. Few other illnesses or problems take over the family in the way Anorexia does. Few other illnesses bring moral values, such as respect and consideration for others, honesty and truth, into question. The exceptions might be drink or drugs – the addictive behaviours similar in their destructive effects on family and friends.
